No matter where you live in the world, you are probably familiar with the Smurfs. Many of us watched this beloved cartoon on Saturday morning’s growing up. Recently, a lot of people got together to celebrate their love of Smurfs. The world’s largest Smurf gathering was held in France on March 7. This event crushed previous records. Thousands of people painted their bodies blue and hit the streets of Landerneau to celebrate all things Smurf. Here’s more information about this unique gathering.
Numerous Smurfs In Attendance
There were around 3,500 people dressed like their favorite Smurf. The most popular Smurfs included Smurfette, Brainy Smurf and Papa Smurf. However, some of the less popular Smurfs like Handy Smurf and Jokey Smurf also could be spotted. All Smurfs seemed to be represented at this gathering. Gargamel, the evil wizard, wasn’t in attendance.
The Previous Record
This event crushed the previous record by about 800 people. The 2019 gathering in Lauchringen, Germany had 2,762 Smurfs in attendance. The previous record was set by attendees in the United Kingdom in 2009. At their gathering, they had 2,510 attendees dressed in their favorite Smurf attire.

Why This One Was Different
There was a lot of controversy surrounding this event. With the spreading of the Coronavirus, many individuals didn’t think that it was a good idea to have such a large gathering of people. However, none of the individuals dressed as Smurfs seemed to be concerned. In fact, many of them thought they were invisible because of their Smurf attire. The day after the event, large gatherings were banned from occurring in France. If this Smurf gathering had been scheduled even just a few days later, it most likely would have been canceled.
About The Smurfs
Easily recognizable by their blue skin and red and white hats, the Smurfs have been around since 1958. They were created by a Belgian artist named Peyo. Since their creation, they have been seen on television screens, and there have also been a few movies created as well as video games. These little blue creatures are now recognizable across the world. They are well-loved for their cheerful personalities as well as their abilities to always persevere even in difficult times.
There’s no word yet as to whether or not there will be another large gathering of Smurfs. However, it wouldn’t be surprising if we see more individuals trying to break another Smurf record next year. People near and far will always join together with painted blue skin in order to celebrate their love of Smurfs.
